Elhanan and the Giant

Elhanan stared, his mouth open, as the giant taunted the entire army of Israel. “Send a man to fight me!” he roared. “I defy Israel and Israel’s God!” Who could hope to fight him? Elhanan’s brother, new to the army, didn’t dare try. Neither did any of the other fighting men, or even King Saul. Would the giant defeat the entire army? What would happen? Was there a man in Israel strong enough to defeat the giant? Or even brave enough to try?

Elhanan is afraid. How can he defend his sheep against giant lions and bears and wolves? He is small, alone, and will be killed himself if he fights. He learns from David, another young shepherd, how to rely on the Lord Jehovah for his strength. Soon they both have a larger fear to overcome. When they carry supplies to the army of Israel, they find that they Philistines have a giant, a man who seems large enough to defeat the entire army. Will anyone stand for the Lord and face the giant?
